This equates to about enough beef from one whole animal to easily fit into a standard 15 cubic foot freezer with room to spare. After dry-aging (hanging in a cooler) for approximately 5 to 7 days, the cut and vacuum sealed meat weighs an average of 195- 230lbs. We are regularly asked how much beef one derives from our grass-fed Dexters. Many consumers who have experienced buying freezer beef in the past from larger breeds of cattle find that half a cow or steer weighs more than a whole Dexter steer and takes up quite a bit more freezer space. We sell by the whole, half (side), or split half (quarter) and the price is based on the hanging weight of the animal (when it is hanging in the cooler to dry age). More and more people are looking for grass-fed and grass-finished beef that is free from any grain products. All our cattle are raised on natural grass pastures because it seems logical to feed them throughout their lives with what they would consume in nature. We also want everyone to know that we have done our best to care for our animals. We want our customers to have a great eating experience. Quite simply, they are 100% grass-fed which means they are raised on natural grass pastures and local hay. Our Dexter cattle are raised the old-fashioned way, meaning no growth hormones, no steroids, and especially no feed antibiotics. Grass Fed: Our Dexters are grass and hay fed with small amounts of sweet feed given as a training tool. LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET ON THE LIST. The renaming calves are sold as beef at 25-27 months of age.WE ARE CURRENTLY TAKING ORDERS FOR SPRING and FALL 2023. We select our top heifers to retain and sell as breeding stock. Our Dexter calves are weaned at 6-7 months of age and continue in our pasture rotation system. Once the fescue pastures are depleted we feed round bale hay until spring grass begins to regrow. Our typical grazing season begins in April and is completed at the end of December. This practice gives adequate recovery time to each pasture with rest periods for each paddock between 27-34 days of rest per paddock. Depending on the size of the pasture our herd grazes a paddock for 4-7 days. Our pastures are predominantly fescue but many fields have clover as well. Our cows successfully nurse fall born calves as part of our pasture rotation system. We began our Dexter herd with White Rock Blossom and have grown the herd to breed 22-26 cows each year. Dexter cattle are a wonderful addition to any farm or homestead. Dexter cattle are easy birthers and display excellent mothering traits. We choose to add Dexter cattle to our farm due to their docile temperament and haven't regretted the decision for a second.
